FEAR IS A LIE

Reclaiming Your Power
Reclaiming Your Power

Throughout the bible it speaks about different types of fear: A holy fear of awe and wonder, a reverence for God, and an unholy fear of being afraid, paralyzed, or constricted. A holy fear reflects and demonstrates reverence for God, acknowledging who He is in all His deity.

The second type of fear, which is sin (Romans 14:23): “Whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.” Sin comes from not trusting or believing in our heavenly Father. The key principle from this scripture is not about the act itself but about the heart and motive behind it.  Is fear causing us to sin against what we know is wrong? We are acting against our faith and conscience.

In this blog, I aim to explore the nature of fear and share how we can move from a place of anxiety to a foundation of courage—transforming fear into fearlessness through the truth of faith and belief.

Many of us, at some point in our lives, will face a depth or element of fear within our being. Through my own personal experience, I have often been challenged by an overwhelming voice of fear from within—a voice that tried to grip and constrict me. This spirit carries a driving force. Yet, through a free-fall experience of determination and grit, belief, and trust in Jesus, I stand today as a testament that fear can be overcome by trusting and believing in a higher voice of hope—one that speaks directly to you and over you.

The root of fear is one of the major portals or strongholds that combines feelings of helplessness and anxiety. The burden of fear leaves us unwilling to trust or believe in anything good or lasting. This is a forceful spirit that brings inner torment and must be eradicated through faith. Fear can often stem from past trauma or hurts. As previously mentioned in (Romans 14:23) says, “Whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.” A lack of faith can hold us back from reaching our full potential here on earth. So, let’s choose to fear less and believe more.

I love what Paul writes in 2 Timothy 1:7: “God has not given us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind.” If God has given us a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind, then where does fear come from? Some of the entry points where the spirit of fear can gain ground are through our mind—thoughts, perceptions, and even what we choose to focus on or see.  Let us reclaim our shield of Faith as a pledge by speaking over ourselves daily: “God has not given me a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, love and a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7.

"Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed,

for I am your God; I will strengthen you,

I will help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

-ISAIAH 41:10

There is always hope when walking with God. Isaiah 41:10 encourages us not to fear because He is with us—and this truth anchors us with inner strength. God goes on to say that we should not be anxious about the things we see around us, because He is with us and will strengthen us daily. He promises to help us and uphold us with His righteous hand. A hand of strength, power, protection, support through the covenant we made with our heavenly Father. Who are we to argue or debate with His solid word of encouragement and faith? Faith always overcomes fear. So, let’s choose “to believe and live out”.

Psalms 56:11 says, “In God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”  Trust is the absolute antidote to fear.  Throughout scripture we see how God upholds people and leads them to their full potential.  One example: Joseph was Jacob’s favourite son in the Old Testament. He trusted God’s word, spoken over him through the dreams he received from God. Imparted dreams that took years to be fulfilled, teaching Joseph patience and faith. This reminds us that our confidence must be rooted in God alone. Faith grows as we strengthen our spiritual muscles beyond our own limitations, and when faith grows, fear diminishes.

I recently watched an Indiana Jones movie, The Last Crusade. There was a scene where Indiana had to cross over a chasm to reach the Holy Grail. Looking down, Indy was fearful that he might plummet thousands of feet below into the abyss. He placed one leg out in front of him, took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and with every fibre of his being, trusted that he would make it across, with his leg stretched out to a seemingly empty space, he then landed on solid ground.  At that moment, the camera angle shifted sideways revealing to the viewer the hidden bridge beneath his foot that was always there.

What can we learn from this epic movie? There are several lessons that can have a tremendous impact through revelation and understanding when we start to visualize from a different perspective.

There are chasms of fear and uncertainty.  The chasm represents the unknown and overwhelming fear that comes when stepping in uncertainty.  A clear passage may only appear after we choose to trust in God.  Our faith begins right here.  We have faith in the deity (God) whom we cannot physically see or touch, yet we know and feel Him beside us.  That is faith in the unseen presence! Clarity often comes after we commit to doing something beyond ourselves. Could this be symbolic of the obstacles in our lives that seems impossible to cross without taking risks? It is impossible to please God without faith (Hebrews 11:6).

The invisible bridge of faith and trust.  Could the hidden bridge be a metaphor for faith, trusting in something we cannot see, something to be hoped for, and the evidence of the ‘tangible’ unseen?  When the camera of our lives shifts to reveal those bridge moments, it mirrors life’s truth: what once seemed impossible is always possible with God.  This is the truth!  We simply need to trust enough to take those first steps. Faith comprehends as fact what cannot be experienced by the physical senses (Hebrews 11:1).  We are encouraged to walk by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). Living our lives consistently with a confident belief in God’s promises.

The acts of stepping forward as courage. The decisions that we make just like Indiana Jones taking that step forward into the unknown, despite fear, symbolizes courage in action. Courage is not the absence of fear but moving forward in-spite of it.  FAITH OVERCOMES FEAR!

Our perspective angle as revelation.  When the perspective of scripture shifts to reveal the hidden things -the bridge- it symbolizes how clarity often comes after we take that leap of faith, just like Indy in the movie. We simply need to trust enough to take the first step for revelation to catch us from falling. The solid ground was there all along, we just couldn’t see it. Our perspective requires trust and growth so we can view it from a different angle of meaning or understanding.

Faithless understanding teaches us that fear can grip and paralyze us, preventing us from reaching our full, God-given potential. Through trust and faith expressed in acts of belief and assurance in Jesus Christ -we can safely cross chasms of obscurity and short sightedness.

When fear whispers, “what if you fall?” faith rises and declares, “What if I fly,” Can we take a step of faith today, choosing to stop waiting for guarantees and start walking by faith, not by sight?  God is the God of the impossibles. What man or woman cannot do, God can.  His kingdom seal of approval is guaranteed. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, who breathes life into the sails of our endless voyage of discovery, we find newfound hope and identity in Christ.

Let’s pray…

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for being my constant source of faith and hope.

In moments when fear whispers and uncertainty cloud my vision,

remind me that you are faithful and true.

Help me today to change my perspective to completely trust in you when the way ahead is not clear to see.

Teach me to walk by faith and not by sight.

Declaring that your promises are true and amen.

When doubts arise, let your word anchor my soul and breathe hope into my heart.

I choose to surrender my fears, my need for control, or my desire for guarantees.

I choose to step forward in faith, knowing that you will hold me and not allow me to fall.

Let my shield of faith overcome my battle with fear.

In Jesus' name, I pray.

Amen!
